Ship Captain Core Duties and Qualifications

A ship captain, referred to as a master, heads the vessel being responsible for the safety of the vessel. The ship captain makes sure that the vessel, the staff, and all other activities follows the maritime rules and regulations.

  • Supervise the navigation and safe movement of the ship.
  • Make sure that all the maritime laws and regulations as well as company policies are followed.
  • Lead and guide the team, assuring the use of proper communication and achieving results.
  • Assess risks and introduce safety measures.
  • Watch over and maintain the vessel in good condition, including inspections and repairs.
  • Cope with emergencies and take important decisions to save lives and protect property.
  • Coordinate directly with the port authorities, customers, and operations team.
  • Oversee the loading, unloading, and securing of the cargo or passengers.
  • Prepare and keep accurate records of logs, reports, and documentation.
  • Represent the shipping company and defend its values and interests.

Qualifications And Certifications

Below are the educational requirements for the role of ship captain sought by the employers:
  • Required bachelor’s degree or equivalent in:
    • Marine transportation
    • Nautical science
    • Marine engineering
    • Related field
  • Master’s degree in maritime studies, marine engineering, or related field.
  • Professional certifications of Officer In Charge of a Navigational Watch (OICNW), certification of marine master for being the master of a ship of 500 gross tons or more, and others are suggested.

  • 8-12 years of prior professional experience at sea in roles like deck officer, chief mate, or captain.
  • Understanding of Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) and GPS.

  • Knowledge of maritime and safety standards, rules, and regulations of the industry.
