General Counsel Core Duties and Qualifications
The General Counsel is primarily the legal advisor of the organization that covers the legal as well as the regulatory requirements of the organization. Preserving organization’s values, reducing vulnerabilities and leveraging potential opportunities.
The General Counsel being an executive leader, ensures that good compliance standards, ethics and transparency practices are practiced together with other stakeholders in handling various delicate legal issues.

Roles and Duties
							Legal Counsel collaborates with different departments to give out legal opinions relating to relative issues that could affect the organization’s business, agreements and regulations as per the following outlined duties and responsibilities:
				- Provide legal advice and consultation services for managers and other related departments.
- Draft, review, and discuss contracts, agreements, and other legal documents.
- Ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and industry standards.
- Handle legal claims, litigation processes, and coordinate with external legal counsel.
- Monitor the legal environment and make recommendations regarding potential impacts on the business.
- Prepare regulatory documents in accordance with legal requirements.
- Identify and assess risks, developing risk management strategies.
- Conduct negotiations with other companies, mediate with third parties and institutions, and handle regulatory matters.
Qualifications And Certifications
							For one to qualify as a general counsel he or she must meet the following educational requirements and other certifications.
				- Required bachelor’s degree or equivalent in:
        - Law (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD)
 
- Advanced law degree (LLM or SJD) is preferable.
- Must hold a license to practice law.
- Professional certifications such as:
        - Certified In-House Counsel (CIC)
- Certified Corporate Counsel (CCC)
- Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional (CCEP)
- Other relevant certifications
 
Skills And Expertise
The following skill sets and experience are the most sought after by employers.
- 8-10 years of professional experience in legal matters, with at least 4 years in a senior role.
- Proficiency in legal software such as Legal Files, Clio, Filevine, and similar programs.
- Strong knowledge of local, national, and international laws.
- Strong moral values and integrity.
- Analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
- Good communication and negotiation skills.
- Experience in risk management.
