Head of Internal Investigations Core Duties and Qualifications

The head of internal investigation is supposed to be the one in charge for the compliance with the laws, fraud, and other violations.It’s responsibilities are to manage the internal investigations, ensure that investigations protocols are being followed and to ensure that all investigations undertaken across the range of cases meet adequate accuracy standards, impartiality and efficiency.

As the key person and a direct report of the leadership, the Head of Internal Investigations provides essential, routine reports and recommendations of the leadership in maintaining the organization’s ethical standards, integrity, and safety for its employees, while defending against legal disputes while fulfilling the following duties and responsibilities:
  • Head and manage the in-house investigations team, providing necessary advice.
  • Establish, execute, and consistently refine investigation protocols and procedures.
  • Personally lead high-profile or complex investigations.
  • Coordinate with the legal, HR, risk management, and compliance teams to identify and eliminate risks.
  • Ensure investigations are conducted in a timely, objective, and legally compliant manner.
  • Summarize investigations and recommend preventive measures or policy adjustments.
  • Supervise training programs to educate employees on policies and standards.
  • Communicate with external attorneys, law enforcement, or regulatory bodies.
  • Create metrics to evaluate the efficiency and timeliness of investigations.

Qualifications And Certifications

Following are the qualifications for the role of Head of Internal Investigations that are required:
  • Required bachelor’s degree or equivalent in:
    • Criminal Justice
    • Law
    • Finance
    • Business Administration
    • Related field
  • Master’s degree such as MBA, JD, or in a related field.
  • Professional certifications like Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional (CCEP), and others are recommended.
