Privacy Officer Core Duties and Qualifications

A Privacy Officer is a person that oversees an organization and its data privacy and protection, including GDPR, HIPAA, or CCPA compliance. They formulate the privacy policy, sustain examination of how personal information is procured, stored and processed and also ensure that the personal data is safe from the unauthorized personnel.

Privacy Officers collaborate with IT, legal, and compliance departments to create an environment that is safe from privacy threats, protect the company’s and its customer’s and employees information while ensuring customers and employee trust.

Privacy Officers also hold a key customer, organizational, and stakeholder relationship through their efforts of establishing an organizational culture that respects the data privacy and security of all customers, employees and others that have dealings with the organization. Lay down and implement procedures to check on the regulatory benchmarks in privacy.
Update frequently the privacy audits and risk assessments.
Take full responsibility for the proper management of data including collection, storage and use.
Research hacking attacks and organize actions to contain its results.
Organize members of staff and provide them with guidelines on privacy of data and information.
Keep track of the privacy regulations updates and adjust practices accordingly.
Act as a diplomat between the organization and the law in as much as the privacy issues are concerned.
Prepare and submit reports of privacy compliance and associated risks to the senior personnel.

Qualifications And Certifications

For one to qualify as a privacy officer he or she must meet the following educational requirements and other certifications.

Required bachelor’s degree or equivalent in:

Law
Information technology
Business administration

Master’s in cyber-security, information management, data protection law or related fields.
Professional certifications of Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP), Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), and others are suggested.

Skills And Expertise

Below outlined skills and experience are required for this position:

3-5 years of professional experience in data privacy, compliance, IT security, risk management or a related field.
Strong knowledge of GDPR, HIPAA, CCPA and rules and regulations related to any specific industry.
Expertise in data protection technologies, encryption, and IT systems.
Good communication and leadership skills.
Strong analytical thinking to interpret data.
Risk assessment and problem solving skills.
Attention to detail.
