Risk and Compliance Manager Core Duties and Qualifications

The Risk and Compliance Manager is an experienced risk management specialist who has primary duties of making sure that an organization complies with set laws and eliminating avoidable risks. This strategic leadership position is responsible for creating, establishing, and managing organizational risk management and compliance programs, protecting the assets, image, and those involved in the organization.

Ideally the candidate has extensive respect, assessment, and management experience while conforming to legal guidelines and policies as well as industrial norms.

Roles and Duties

Its primary function is to analyse threats that exist within the environment and can impact the company in terms of business opportunities and economic performance, compliance to the laws as well as company polices. A manager needs to perform the following duties in order to fulfil the above mentioned functions:
  • Find and utilize approaches to monitor and avoid exposure to legal and operational risks.
  • Obey the various laws, rules, and standards of the industry.
  • Prepare a checklist of risks that may arise and develop a strategy to minimize them.
  • Explain and teach employees on how to avoid risks and act on compliance.
  • Track regulatory shifts and modify rules to remain in complete conformity constantly.
  • Work together with different departments to align risk and compliance efforts with business goals.
  • Identify and report risk and compliance problems to the management and recommend courses of action.

Qualifications And Certifications

For one to qualify as a risk and compliance manager he or she must meet the following educational requirements and other certifications.
  • Required bachelor’s degree or equivalent in:
    • Law
    • Finance
    • Business administration
  • Advanced law degree (LLM or MBA) are preferable.
  • Professional certifications of Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager (CRCM), Certified Risk Manager (CRM), Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional (CCEP) and others are suggested.

  • 5-8 years of professional experience in risk management, compliance, auditing, or a related field.
